Dwg II Formalism

a. In your own words how would you define Formalism?

Formalism is based purely on good design. It is not conceptual, but deals with the fundamentals of design. It is based on aesthetics and form. It seems very simple, yet very informative.

b. Kadinsky, Mondrian and Malevich are all considered to be early Morn Abstractionists. After looking at their art which artist do you think best fits
into your own definition of Formalism and why?

I think Mondrian fits best with my definition of formalism. I think this because he uses geometric abstract shapes that are easy to interpret and are unobjective. It is based upon the fundamentals of design and it feels relaxing to look at without trying to think what he is trying to get across.

c. Pick one of these artists and discuss how their artwork fits into Formalism?

Agnes Martin bases her work on abstracted lines. These lines made her work unobjective with the detail and spacing between lines. Her work feels very structured and relaxed. Everything is where it should be, having no conflict between lines. The piece has no concept, but is using simple lines to make something that is stimulating to see. Her work is done for arts sake and not to relay a message.

d. Find an artist on The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program Web site that relates to your drawing for this project. How does there art relate to your concept, subject and style?

I picked Arturo Herrera because his work is very close to mine in how I'm trying to portray my vision. He likes to collage very random, abstract shapes and uses very unique compositions. This fits tightly with mine in that I'm creating multiple compositions flowing into each other on one big composition. I find a close connection with his work.

Dwg II Expressionism

a. What is the difference between Expressionism and Cognitivisim? To answer this question you must define each word first.

Expressionism is the tendency of an artist to distort reality for an emotional effect. Expressionism is exhibited in many art forms, including painting, literature, theatre, and music. Artists are inspired by emotions and feelings, and use this to drive their work. Cognitivism interpretates the world in a aesthetic value while using emotion as only part of the piece . The difference between the two is that Expressionism uses the emotional effect of the artist to create and distort a piece, while Cognitivism uses emotion as a fundamental rather than the driving force behind a piece. It is also used to define how art can teach us.

b. Without quoting Tolstoy, what is his definition of art?

Tolstoy defines that art is something that allows expression, emotion, and feeling on any type of medium in hopes that someone will feel and understand what is going on in the work. As if you could feel and understand the artist and idea as the piece was being created and displayed. He defined it as somewhat a bridge from the idea and artist to the viewer. If the artist wanted the viewer to feel a certain emotion or think of a certain idea, then he believed that's what the piece should ultimately do.

c. What is the role of the viewer in Collingwood’s definition of art?

The role of the viewer is to adapt to and recreate the art based on their emotion and feeling. If the piece was successful in doing this, it could function as a piece of art. Collingwood believed this would better the artist and viewer in their satisfaction and definition of art.

d. Discuss the use of metaphor in Louis Bourgeois and Kiki Smith’s art?

Louis Bourgeois work uses metaphors in a more sexual, representative way. She portrays women as basically taking care of men. She does this by showing her opinion through something like a woman holding a man's penis. Depicting the woman's direct influence on the man. Kiki Smith on the other hand uses a range of metaphors such as birds, insects, and the human body as sexual references to frailty of the body. She also uses heavens and peaceful images to represent the connection between us and nature.

e. Find an artist on The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program Web site that relates to your drawing for this project. How does there art relate to your concept, subject and style?

I picked Nguyen Ly because he depicts figure in a raw, simple form with little detail. In figures are surrounded by space, leaving them very mysterious and interesting. I like the way he portrays the figures in unique movements and stroke weights. This is much like mine in that I'm depicting female figures in black outline, simplistic form, surround by space, color, and chaos.

DWG II Weeks 3-6

a. In your own words define realistic art.

-Realistic Art is defined as art that is recognized and understood. The piece is open for interpretation and allows the viewer to identify what is being portrayed.

b. How does Plato define good art?

-Plato defines good art as art that is created through good behavior and truth. This includes things such as beauty and balance, creating a development of good art.

c. What would Plato say about Koon’s artwork?

-I think Plato would disapprove of Koon's work because they are merely direct opposites. Koon is more of a contemporary, expressionistic artist that depends on common, simple things. Plato believed in a society that was upheld by truth and beauty through more positive, realistic means.

d. In your own words, how would Aristotle define good art?

-Aristotle defined good art with more expression. He believed good art was made through knowledge. He believed that art should be seen for its purpose rather than just craftsmanship. He had more of a conceptual outlook than Plato. He saw art as a way of expressing ones self. He also believed that good art must be beautiful, but was much more open to accepting beauty by means of others.

e. In your personal philosophy is “obscene art a contradiction of terms? Why or why not?

-No, because I am open to many things when viewing art. I can see beauty or truth in even the ugliest works of art. I feel that a piece does not have to have pure craftsmanship, but the backbone should be purely conceptual. If a work of art can cause discussion or a reaction, then I think the work is successful.

f. Are vivid sexual images more obscene that vivid images of violence, poverty,
display of extreme wealth or sickness?

-To me, no above subject matter is more obscene. I think it all depends solely on each individual viewer. Every subject can have a different effect on a viewer than a separate one. This gives an open sense to interpretation, but no single subject can be seen as more obscene than another.

g. Find an artist on The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program Web site that relates to your drawing for this project. How does there art relate to your concept, subject and style?

-I picked Alejandra Villasmil because she likes to construct different animals abstractly with a sense of naturalism and humor. This ties closely with my concept and piece by connecting with how I am visually depicting my subjects with abstract animals. Her work is very close to mine in that I want to create a sense of humor, yet portray a very serious story.

DWG II Weeks 1-3

a. The question isn’t “what is art”; the questions should be “Is it good art?” Please site one example of good art and one example of bad art. Explain why? You may provide a link to images of this art for examples.

Good art is very effective at expressing its idea and accomplishes that expression through the means peculiar to art, If the expression is weak, unclear, or prone to misinterpretation then it is not effective in means to the goal of the ida being expressed and should be considered bad art. I have posted two examples of what I believe to be good art (first link) and bad art (second link).

http://www.turtlekiss.com/convoy%20(60).jpg
-I find this to be good art because I find it to be very beautiful and expressive. It leaves me thinking and wondering, even when I'm not looking at the piece.

http://www.mqw.at/mediafiles/5/6_BadPainting_Currin_306.jpg
-I find this to be bad art because I find it may have a message behind it, but I find it to be ineffective and unappealing. This may have been the target for the designer, yet I find it repulsive.

b. Define honorific art. Please answer in your own words.

Honorific art has a multitude of definitions. According to "Why is That Art?" the categories of formalism, expressionism, realism, and postmodernist theory all make up the definition. Yet to me, Honorific art is a piece of work that can be respected and is effective in expressing the artists opinion or idea.

c. Define classificatory definition of art. Please answer in your words.

Classificatory art is like the bridge between "good" art and "bad" art. It means that a piece of art, good or bad, is accepted and classified as a piece of art by an art world. It helps clarify whether or not certain pieces can or may be considered as art.

d. Where in discussion of art and aesthetics do you feel most uncomfortable? How would you become less uncomfortable in this subject?

I feel most uncomfortable dealing with epistemology, or justified beliefs. I find it hard to say that there is a such thing as justified beliefs when each and every person has the ability to interpret and follow there own beliefs. I think everyday opinion shoots down the idea of epistemology.

e. Find an artist on The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program Web site (http://www.drawingcenter.org/viewingprogram) that relates to your drawing for this project. How does there art relate to your views of Beauty and Repulsion?

Cristi Rinklin is an abstract artist that works with altered visual understanding of reality. She uses powerful, yet imaginative shapes and colors to portray her ideas an emotions. This is much related to my work in that I too love to depict my emotions and ideas into my work with awkward, unrealistic shapes while using complimentary, strong colors. Visually her work is very balanced and flows very nicely. This is one of my main objectives as an artist, to make a harmonious work of art, one that completely works together.

Picture Resembling Repulsion to Me

Pictures Resembling Beauty to Me

Beauty and Repulsion Definitions

My definition of "Beauty"
-I find the word beauty to represent that what is pleasing, attractive, fine, pure, and harmonious. Anything can resemble beauty from people, animals, plants, emotions, ideas, and many other things.

My definition of "Repulsion"
-I find the word repulsion to represent that what is obscene, disliked, distorted, hideous, unwanted, and numerous other words that describe hostility. Repulsion is quite the opposite of beauty.
