DWG II Weeks 1-3

a. The question isn’t “what is art”; the questions should be “Is it good art?” Please site one example of good art and one example of bad art. Explain why? You may provide a link to images of this art for examples.

Good art is very effective at expressing its idea and accomplishes that expression through the means peculiar to art, If the expression is weak, unclear, or prone to misinterpretation then it is not effective in means to the goal of the ida being expressed and should be considered bad art. I have posted two examples of what I believe to be good art (first link) and bad art (second link).

-I find this to be good art because I find it to be very beautiful and expressive. It leaves me thinking and wondering, even when I'm not looking at the piece.

-I find this to be bad art because I find it may have a message behind it, but I find it to be ineffective and unappealing. This may have been the target for the designer, yet I find it repulsive.

b. Define honorific art. Please answer in your own words.

Honorific art has a multitude of definitions. According to "Why is That Art?" the categories of formalism, expressionism, realism, and postmodernist theory all make up the definition. Yet to me, Honorific art is a piece of work that can be respected and is effective in expressing the artists opinion or idea.

c. Define classificatory definition of art. Please answer in your words.

Classificatory art is like the bridge between "good" art and "bad" art. It means that a piece of art, good or bad, is accepted and classified as a piece of art by an art world. It helps clarify whether or not certain pieces can or may be considered as art.

d. Where in discussion of art and aesthetics do you feel most uncomfortable? How would you become less uncomfortable in this subject?

I feel most uncomfortable dealing with epistemology, or justified beliefs. I find it hard to say that there is a such thing as justified beliefs when each and every person has the ability to interpret and follow there own beliefs. I think everyday opinion shoots down the idea of epistemology.

e. Find an artist on The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program Web site (http://www.drawingcenter.org/viewingprogram) that relates to your drawing for this project. How does there art relate to your views of Beauty and Repulsion?

Cristi Rinklin is an abstract artist that works with altered visual understanding of reality. She uses powerful, yet imaginative shapes and colors to portray her ideas an emotions. This is much related to my work in that I too love to depict my emotions and ideas into my work with awkward, unrealistic shapes while using complimentary, strong colors. Visually her work is very balanced and flows very nicely. This is one of my main objectives as an artist, to make a harmonious work of art, one that completely works together.
